The Difference Between a Good Space and a Great Space? Decor and Detail!

Recently we were asked for our best tips and strategies for finding home decor and antique pieces. I was thrilled to be asked this question because decor and detail pieces are what complete a space! This part of design is quite possibly the most fun because this is where you really get to show your style! There are so many directions you can go in to find these pieces for the room or project you're working on, it all depends on your preference!

Accessory Companies

One path to go on is to use big companies to order your decor and furniture. Some companies carry several different styles for you to choose from and some have a specific style they like to work with. Surf the web, sign up for magazine subscriptions, and explore the possibilities some big companies might have for you. Some of our go to companies for our projects include Uttermost, Regina Andrew, and Global Views
Use can also use online auctions and galleries to help you search for those one of a kind pieces. Invaluable is a wonderful Fine Art online resource. Their platform connects anyone with internet access to thousands of auctions going on around the world, so it's a pretty cool opportunity for art collectors!

Go Antique and Be Thrifty!

Another favorite of ours is to buy antique pieces! Antiques are so fun; you can find something fun and quirky, something more classical and elegant, or even pair them together! Your entire space will feel so much more exciting and welcoming. Almost every town has small, local antique shops that you can spend all day in looking for some unique treasures. I love to go antiquing in local shops in Gainesville and Ocala when I have some free time. It's also super fun to do this whenever you're traveling! Every place I go I love to search the town for unique pieces that can add a special touch to whatever space I'm currently working on, or even to my own home.
Now, if you're thinking "Antiquing? I don't want a bunch of old, granny style furniture in my house" you're not alone. However, that theory is not your fate if you use antique pieces. Repurpose old items that you find: reupholster an old chair or bench, use a cool old lamp and add a new lamp shade, paint or stain an old dresser or table, the possibilities are endless! You can also really spice it up by using a variety of items in your space such as in the dining room: use different kinds of dining chairs but upholster them in the same fabric or mix and match side tables and consoles in the living room. Moves like these make your home feel fun and trendy! And who doesn't want to be a part of the latest design trend?
Garage sales are also a super easy and fun way to find furniture and decor for your space! Haven't you heard the saying 'one mans trash is another mans treasure'? This is where you really need to bring out your creative side, have a blast, and add YOUR personal touch! Again, REPURPOSE! Trust me, it makes all the difference!

Shop Chain Stores

Some people shy away from places like TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby, Marshalls, etc. when they are shopping for their home because they feel like its too cookie cutter. Although I can agree with that to an extent, these places are great to search through when you are looking for something small to finish off a space. Whether it be some accent throw pillows, a sculpture piece, or a small piece of furniture I always check out these stores to see if they have that final touch that I'm looking for. An added bonus: they're cheap!!

Overall, when looking for the best details for your space you really just need to decide what kind of look you are going for and spend the time looking for them. We use all of these options when working on a project, never sticking to just one company in order to find those special details. It's all about getting that eclectic mix from different places that tell your story. I promise you the time is so worth it when you find that piece that speaks to you and completely enhances your project!
